ARIS 2017

2017 was an interesting year for Aris, with an exciting season of staged readings, including both engaging works as yet unseen in Atlanta, as well as the return of some Aris favorites.

In the summer of 1939, two ornithologists come to a remote Scottish island to observe the native wildlife - or are they there for another reason? Inhabited only by the old caretaker and his young niece, this intriguing play explores the impact of hidden motivations, desire, and the conflict between the demands of science vs. nature, and of the past vs. the future.
Burns Night (January 25) SOLD OUT! (Thank you!)
Robert Burns captured the spirit of his Scotland in verse and song, and people the world over celebrate this marvelous poet annually on Burns Night. Aris offers our tribute this January 25 by bringing back our evening of song and readings from this master poet. Come feed your thirsty ears!
The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning (February 15)
Hero or traitor? Tim Price's gripping drama is based on the life of convicted whistleblower Bradley Manning, the child of a Welsh mother and American father, who enlisted in the army and infamously leaked classified documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. How does a person come to a place where identity and duty collide?
Celtic Shorts (March 21)
Thank you for an amazing turnout at this incredible event! Your participation makes the rest of our season possible!
Penelope (April 4)
Homer's Odyssey is an undisputed classic of Western literature, indeed of the Human Experience, appearing and recurring time and time again in many ways in our culture. Enda Walsh's brilliant, hilarious, and contemporary treatment of the material has four of the Penelope's suitors stuck in the bottom of an empty swimming pool, scheming, hoping, waiting, and wondering. Pairs well with "Ulysses".
The Welsh Boy (May 23) Get Tickets!
This story of passion, love, and revenge is based on true events. In eighteenth-century rural England the daughter of the local landed gentry falls in love with a penniless Welsh singer, and they engage in a passionate affair. But when she reneges on her promise to marry him, he exacts a very cruel, and very public, revenge! Based on the 1741 novel “The True Anti-Pamela” by James Parry, this is a story about sex and love and the price of living up to society’s expectations.
Ulysses (June 6 & 7)Get Tickets!
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! James Joyce's famous novel "Ulysses", adapted for the stage by Dermot Bolger in a hilarious, raucous evening that is true to the original, and captures its breath and blood in the most immediate and accessible way. Not to be missed.
